For 2012–2013, data on high volume inpatient surgeries is available in CIHI’s pre-formatted Quick Stats table (DAD/HMDB Hospitalization Rate, Average Length of Stay, Top 10 High-Volume Inpatient Hospitalizations and Surgeries, and Hospital-Based Newborn Rate, 2012–2013).
(a) In 2002–2003, Nunavut did not submit discharge data to CIHI. As such, Canadian figures for 2002–2003 do not include Nunavut and are not comparable with figures from other fiscal years.
(b) Quebec data prior to 2006–2007 is not presented, as information to define surgical specialty was unavailable. As such, Canadian figures prior to 2006–2007 do not include Quebec and are not comparable with data from 2006–2007 onwards.
(c) The methodology to identify inpatient surgical discharges changed as of 2009–2010; therefore, figures prior to this fiscal year are not comparable with figures for 2009–2010 and onward. See “About this Quick Stat” for more detailed information.
(d) Sources: Discharge Abstract Database (DAD) and Hospital Morbidity Database (HMDB), Canadian Institute for Health Information; Fichier des hospitalisations MED-ÉCHO, ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux du Québec.
