For 2012–2013, data on newborns born in hospital is available in CIHI’s pre-formatted Quick Stats table (DAD/HMDB Hospitalization Rate, Average Length of Stay, Top 10 High-Volume Inpatient Hospitalizations and Surgeries, and Hospital-Based Newborn Rate, 2012–2013).

(a) In 2002–2003, Nunavut did not submit discharge data to CIHI. As such, Canadian figures for 2002–2003 do not include Nunavut and are not comparable with figures from other fiscal years.

(b) Due to privacy and confidentiality concerns, and to minimize the risk of residual disclosure, volumes of fewer than five discharges have been suppressed in the cells and removed from total discharge counts.

(c) The “all” sex category includes those categorized as male, female and other. Detailed counts for the “other” category are not shown for privacy reasons, as the figures are less than five.

(d) Sources: Discharge Abstract Database (DAD) and Hospital Morbidity Database (HMDB), Canadian Institute for Health Information; Fichier des hospitalisations MED-ÉCHO, ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux du Québec.

(e) Quebec data from 2006–2007 to 2009–2010 was sourced from MED-ÉCHO. Quebec data from 2010–2011 and onwards was sourced from the HMDB.
